What Is Midwifery Care?

Midwifery care is a relationship-centered, evidence-based approach to women’s healthcare that supports the body’s natural processes while prioritizing safety, informed choice, and individualized care. Certified nurse midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice registered nurses (Nurse Practitioners) with specialized training in obstetrics, gynecology, and primary care for women.

At Bloom, midwifery care means listening first, honoring your values, and partnering with you to make informed decisions throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. We view pregnancy and birth as normal life events, while remaining highly skilled in recognizing and responding to medical needs when they arise.
Benefits of Choosing a Midwife

Women who receive midwifery-led care often experience:

  • Longer, more meaningful prenatal visits focused on education, emotional wellbeing, and trust
  • Lower rates of unnecessary interventions, including inductions and cesarean births
  • Greater support for physiologic labor and birth, movement, comfort measures, and coping techniques
  • Higher satisfaction with the birth experience and a stronger sense of being heard and respected
  • Continuity of care, with providers who truly know you and your preferences
  • Personalized postpartum support, including recovery, feeding, and emotional health

Midwifery care is especially well-suited for women with low-risk pregnancies, but also provides thoughtful, collaborative care for those who develop medical needs along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are midwives safe?

Yes. Certified nurse midwives (CNMs) are highly trained, licensed healthcare providers who specialize in evidence-based care for pregnancy, birth, and women’s health. Research consistently shows that for low-risk pregnancies, midwifery-led care is as safe as physician-led care, with fewer unnecessary interventions and high patient satisfaction.

  • Do midwives deliver babies in the hospital?

Absolutely. At Bloom OBGYN and Midwifery, our midwives attend births exclusively in the hospital. We deliver at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital. This allows us to support physiologic, low-intervention birth while ensuring immediate access to medical, surgical, anesthesia, and neonatal services if needed.

  • Can I still have an epidural if I choose a midwife?

Yes. Choosing a midwife does not limit your pain management options. Midwives support a wide range of comfort measures—from movement, labor support, and non-pharmacologic options to epidurals and other medications. Your preferences are respected and revisited throughout labor.

  • What happens if complications arise during pregnancy or labor?

Midwifery care includes ongoing risk assessment throughout pregnancy and labor. If a medical concern develops, our midwives collaborate with our physician partner to ensure timely consultation or transition of care when appropriate. This integrated model prioritizes both safety and continuity.

  • Will I still see a doctor during my care?

Yes. All patients at Bloom OBGYN and Midwifery meet with our physician at least once during pregnancy. This visit allows you to establish a relationship with the physician who closely collaborates with our midwives and may be involved in your care if medical needs arise.
If your pregnancy becomes more complex, physician involvement increases as appropriate, with seamless collaboration between midwives and the doctor to ensure you receive the right level of care at the right time—without losing continuity or support.

  • Is midwifery care only for “natural” birth?

Not at all. Midwifery care is about informed choice, not a single definition of birth. Whether you hope for an unmedicated labor, plan for an epidural, or need medical interventions along the way, our role is to support you with respect, education, and individualized care.

  • What if I need a cesarean birth?

If a cesarean becomes medically necessary, our physician partner performs the surgery in the hospital. Midwives remain involved in your care whenever possible, either as the surgical first assist or by supporting informed consent, emotional support, and postpartum recovery.

  • Who is a good candidate for midwifery care?

Midwifery care is an excellent option for women with low-risk pregnancies and also for those who value:

    Personalized, relationship-based care

    Shared decision-making

    Evidence-based recommendations

    A supportive hospital birth environment

If risk factors develop, we guide you through next steps with clarity and compassion.

  • Can I receive gynecologic and postpartum care from a midwife?

Yes. Our midwives provide well-woman care, family planning, contraception, postpartum support, and gynecologic care beyond pregnancy and through menopause—supporting women through every stage of life.
